WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF MS.DOS.SYS PROGRAME?

In the real DOS versions before Windows 95, it was part of the DOS kernel and contained the code for the non-io portions of DOS. In the Windows 9x series, it was just a stub and if memory serves, was a text-based config file that changes aspects of the bootup process.
