What is the purpose of ionic and covalent bonding?

This is a very vague question. The purpose of this type of bonding is for atoms to reach a noble gas state (or when they have a full valence octet). This makes the atom much more stable due to energetics ociated with lack of a full valence shell. That is the biggest reason for bonding.
